Below you’ll find more information regarding dental veneers.
What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers, more commonly known as porcelain veneers are wafer-thin shells that are bonded to the front surface of the teeth. They are custom-made and crafted out of tooth-colored material to resemble the natural shape and color of the patient’s teeth.
The bonding of veneers to the teeth is regarded as a cosmetic procedure, i.e. to improve the appearance of the teeth by changing their length, shape, color, etc. by placing veneers of desired form.
Porcelain Veneers Vs. Resin Veneers
There are two kinds of veneers that you can avail: Porcelain and Resin/Composite.
Here, we describe each in detail so you will be better able to decide which will suit you.
Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are made to resemble your natural tooth color, which makes them hardly noticeable when put. They are resistant to stains, are strong and last for long times (for 10-20 years). However, they can be expensive.
The procedure involves your dentist removing and sculpting some part of your enamel for the veneer and then bonding the material on your teeth. Since some part of the enamel is removed to make room for the veneer, this process is irreversible.
Resin/Composite Veneers
These veneers are made out of composite materials and are much less expensive than porcelain veneers. These are also made in a lab and your dentist will prepare your teeth for the procedure. After reshaping your teeth, your dentist will place the composite material over your teeth and shape it as desired. Next, they will expose your teeth to a special light that will harden the material. Lastly, your dentist will smoothen and polish the resin to make it appear more natural.
Composite veneers are easy to repair, need less preparation and may cost less than porcelain ones. However, they don’t last as long and can wear down much more easily than porcelain ones.
Who Needs Dental Veneers?
You can avail dental veneers if you have:
Teeth discoloration due to various reasons, such as root canal treatment, stains from drugs or beverages.
Worn-out teeth
Broken or chipped teeth
Misaligned, irregular shaped or uneven teeth
Gaps between teeth
Procedure For Dental Veneers At North Reading Family Dental
At North Reading Family Dental, this is the procedure we carry out for dental veneers:
Diagnosis And Treatment
First, we conduct a discussion with you about your condition and ask you about what you want to achieve. Next, we will examine your teeth to ensure that veneers are the best option for you. We will also apprise you of the procedures and limitations of veneers.
Preparation
After ensuring that veneers are the best option for you, we will reshape your tooth’s surface so that the veneer can be placed on top of it. Next, we will take the impression of your teeth so that the veneers can be prepared in a laboratory.
Bonding
When we receive the veneers, we will make an appointment with you in the subsequent days for the bonding procedure. We will first temporarily place the veneer on your teeth to see if they fit properly. If all is good, we will bond them with a dental cement. A special light will be shone on your teeth to harden the cement. Any excess will be removed and you’ll be good to go!
